WOODVILLE & DISTRICT

Mr and Mrs Beales. cf Masteiton, are the guests of their son, Mr A. 11. Beales. Kumeroa. Sergeant-Pilot TV Bolton is spending leave at his 'parents' home in Gorge Road. Mr W. A. Cook, of Saddle Road, is undergoing treatment at tl.e Danneviike Hospital. When the strategic manoeuvres of the Central Command commenced this morning, the passage of mechanised troops and transport through Woodville towards Wairarapa for several hours created much interest. Mr J. A. McQueen, of Wellington, is acting as relieving slationmasler at \Voodville during the annual leave of Mr K. D. Orr, which commenced yesterday. The Wellington-Napier mail train yesterday made iho journey to Woodvillc via the Wairarapa route. Gorge rail. traffic ir. now proceeding normally. Leslie, the 10-months-old son of Mr and Mrs C. H. Hayes, of Apiti, was the victim of a sad fatal micliap last Friday, through putting to his mouth a bottle containing disinfectant. The child died ill the Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday morning, the fluid having entered ils lungs. Mr Hayes is a son of Mr and Mrs A Haves, Mastcrton Road.

The rainfall registered at the residence of Mr J. C. Bolton, Gorge Road, for the period from Saturday morning till Monday morning wu« 4.50 in. The annual meeting of the Woodville Football Club was held last evening, when officers for the enauing year were elected as follow:—Patron, Or P. 11. Mules: president, Mr S. Campbell; vice-presi-dents, Messrs P. Harris. C Batchelor, A. Vowell. G. Morgan, W, J. Miller, .1. J. Young. J. Charles, J. Sullivan, C. Nelson, G. Whillans, 11. If. Little, G. Peebles, .). Bryson, 11. Giles: secretary, Mr E. McNeil; treasurer. Mr C. Batchelor; committee Messrs V. A. Burlaco, V. Walker. B. Fulton, O. Miller, P. Harris. G. Morgan, O. Williams and 11. Little. It was decided to enter only a senior team, and Messrs Little and Lurlace were, appointed coaches. The president and Mr G. Morgan were appointed delegates to the Bush Union and Mr V. Walker was elected club csptain. TIIE FLOOD. Unfortunately, the flood losses of valuable stock have mounted to serious proportions in the Woodville district. Sheep would naturally constitute the greatest numerical loss, but cattle, horses, and poultry figure largely in the reports. In addition to other stock a Ngawapurua resident lost several donkeys. Individual losses of up to 400 sheep have keen mentioned. The lower area of Ngwa.purua seems to have been very heavily smitten as regards losses of sheep, cattle. and horses. Much of this year's hay harvest has been swept away or ruined by submersion.

An instance of curious (lood-cfTccls is related bv a farmer who had filled a silopit. It was found that the whole of the ensilage had floated out. On the same property a shed housing pumping plant had disappeared, leaving the machinery intact. Residents of long-standing compare the volume of the flood closely with that of 1902. It was observed > that the Mangahou Stream, which rises in the Tararuas and joins the Manawatu in the Ballance district, was barely affected by the rnins. As this stream carries a great volume of water when flooded, a large-scale contribution from this source would have ureatly heightened (he flood-level both above and kelow~the Gorge. As it was, the peak volume surging down the Gorge was an eerie example of the forces of Nature let loose for a welter of destruction.
