BOLDER ACTION URGED
AMERICAN EDUCATIONIST. WASHINGTON, May I. Di- J. B. Conant, president of Harvard University, broadcasting from Boston on a nation-wide network, called on the United States immediately to enter the war. "The hour for action has struck," he said. "Our best hope of avoiding a later battle against desperate odds is to become a naval belligerent now. I believe the nation is ready to join in the fight lor freedom." Br Conant said there was little chance that England ~would be overrun, but there was critical danger in the Atlantic. FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY.
The American people had fought before for the existence of Democracy in the world and were ever ready to light again, declared President Roosevelt, speaking at the dedication of the late President Woodrow Wilson's birthplace, Staunton, Virginia, as a national shrine. The President expressed his faith that Democracy would emerge triumphant from the tragic conflict which the world witnessed todav.
The York Herald-Tribune reports that 17 prominent Americans representing a cross-section of military and naval defence production leaders and economists, have joined in'a statement asserting that the balance of victory in the war lies with Britain and will remain weighted in her favour a.s long as the United Stales continues an uninterrupted flow of essential materials and helps by guaranteeing their arrival
