BOMBING OF HAMBURG
GREAT DAMAGE CAUSED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 4. JI.A.F. bombers on Friday night heavily attacked Hamburg, causing extensive damage. Large fires were seen in the industrial area and around the docks. . Other aircraft attacked Emden and oil stores at Rotterdam. During daylight two enemy, supply ships of about 500 tons were attacked off the Dutch coast. One was set on fire and the other is believed to have been sunk outright. Four British aircraft are missing from these operations.
An enemy bomber shot clown over an aerodrome in Northern Franco at a height of only 1000 ft was to the credit of a sergeant flying a Havoc plane, who had achieved the same success over another enemy-ocenpicd aerodrome three nights before. The explosion when the enemv machine blew up 'shook the Havoc. When it returned to its base it had a propeller chipped, one engine coiling dented and scars on both wings, caused by bits flying off the victim. The sergeant finished off the night's work by bombing the aerodrome. During training in ISW9 this sergeant broke both legs and he 'had to go through his firing training again before he passed into the night fighter squadron.
