CONTROL OF RIVER

MAXAAVATU-OROUA BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the Alanawatu-Oroua River Board to-day Trustee J. Caliesen presided and other members present were Trustees H. A. Seifert. H. J. Lancaster, 4V. Jackson. R. J. Law, S. Parsons, \Y. S. Carter, and 1L G. Gower. In a letter forwarded by Air L. G. Lowry, ALP ~ the Alinister of Public Works (Hon. H. T. Armstrong; stated that the board's request l-or a subsidy for the erection of a stopbank at Parekawai point had been referred to the district engineer. Wellington, and the application noted lor consideration on the forthcoming estimates. The Public Works Department advised that the transfer of a subsidy front the Buckley Drainage Board to the Alanawatu-Oroua River Board, to carrv out work on the erosion at AH McGill's property. Koputaroa, had !>een approved. The proposals submitted by t’he engineer also had been approved and application was being made for the issue of an authority to the board.

Six settlers at Hamilton's Line are to be written to asking them to repair the cattle crossings on the stop-banks within one month. At the conclusion of the meeting Air Caliesen thanked the members lor their courtesy and help while he had been chairman. This was the last meeting of the present board, lie said. When he took over the chairmanship he knew it would !>e a difficult position. but lie felt the board had done very good work. He had resolved that all the benefits should be spread as widely as possible, and lie considered the board had been very impartial. He hoped they would all be returned and that their pleasant associations would continue. He also thanked the secretary (Air R. H. Spencer) and the engineer (Air H. R. Farquhar) for their help. Air Carter said that when they selected Mr Caliesen as chairman they had done a good job. He had been fully impartial. “I would like to come back,” he said, “if only to see flic Whirokino cut through. Alessrs Seifert, Lancaster and Wail also spoke eulogising the work of the chairman, and Afessrs Farquhar and Spencer thanked Air Caliesen for his remark's.
