SAVAGE NAZI RAID
DESOLATION AT PLYMOUTH. (Hoc. 10-i.j a.m.) LONDON, April 30. Plymouth, last night, sult'cicd the filth heavy air ram m lime nights. Ine hist wave ol raiders arrived at nightiall, and the attack lasted many hours .without a lull. Oil bombs were followed by high explosives and many merely tore up the ruins ol the previous attacus, but • numbers of dwellings were demolished, causing heavy casualties. An old folks homo was severely i damaged. The Mayor of Plymouth stated thai “some of the city streets seemed to be nothing but a desert of dusty rubble.” Bombs were dropped in other parts of the south west and Southern England. East Anglia, and South Wales. Tiiete were a number of casualties, and some were killed in the Jattei area. A'German communujiie said Cardiff. Lowestoft, and Ipswich were attacked in addition to Plymouth. The Minister ol Labour (Mr Ernest Bavin), in a speech, said ‘2'J.OOO had been killed in Britain in air raids prior to March 31 and 40,000 injured. Jt is confirmed that iour enemy bombers were shot down by anti aircraft fire during tlie raid on Plymouth. making a total of eight destroyed during the night. One of these was brought down as it was about to land at a base in Northern France. Other aircraft at another aerodrome in enemy territory were attacked and dam a geti.
