BUTTER BOX SUPPLIES

NEXT SEASON’S PROSPECTS. Sponsored by the Cheltenham Dairy Company, the following remit was carried at the ward conference of the Dairy Board, held in Palmerston North, yesterday:—That, in view of the alarming ]>ositton created by the shortage of butler box supplies during tho peak production period this season, the Dairy Board be requested to take the necessary action to safeguard the industry from tho possibility of any similar position arising in the future. In moving the remit, Mr C. G. O. Dernier said the position had been very serious indeed. On March 1 his company had not suflieient boxes for that day’s manufacture arid some butter had to ho held until the next day. Th.o remit was seconded by Mr S. A. Ilroadbelt. Mr A. Linton, the representative for the ward, said that there was a shortage of dry timber in the timber yards at the beginning of the season. Actually, the timber industry had got through a most dilficult year and had manufactured 717.814 more butter boxes than last year. None had thought that there would he an increase m the amount of butter produced as well as an increase in chesse. The formation of the Forestry Company for overseas service had withdrawn a large number of limber workers. There were large supplies of timber now bold in the yards to dry out in the winter, and it was not expected that there would he difficulty next year. The position regarding cheese crates would ho more difficult than that tor butter boxes. However, the price would probably rise. The box-viaking plant at Palmerston North last year turned out over 1,000.000 boxes, but big totals could be reached only if the plants were kept working all the time and to achieve this the factories had to store as many boxes as they could ; also, the fire risk was (bus reduced. The remit was carried.
