STREET MAINTENANCE

EXTENT OF CITY WORKS. In a comprehensive report covering the operations of his department between' April 1. 1938. and March 31, 1941, presentee! by the city engineer (Mr J. 11. Hughes) to the City Council, last night, a number of interesting facts were given in relation to work carried out under his control. The report showed the annual cost of street maintenance in the three years as follow: 1938-39, £7149; 193940, £8828; 1940 41, £7BIB. The length of streets sealed in the three years was ten. miles. Of the 691 miles of streets within the city 50 1-3 were now surfaced with either tar or bitumen. The amounts spent on street scaling in the three vears were, respectively. £3417, £4120. and £4379. The total length of footways requiring maintenance was 124 miles, including 2.22 miles in the State housing block in College Street, which would be controlled by the council when the streets were dedicated. In the three years a total of 105 chains of new footways had been constructed by the council. For the Housing Department (apart from the College Street block) TO9 chains of new streets had been formed.

The total length of sewers serving the city was 74.54 miles.
