PROGRESS OF CITY WORKS. Presenting hie annual report to tlie City Council, last evening, tlie city gas manager (Mr J. Lcarmonth) stated that, in tlie past two years several improvements had been carried out at the gasworks for gi eater efficiency. The report showed a decrease in the gas made of 503,00-3 cubic feet, as computed with the total for the previous year, and a decrease in the output for consumption or 591,000 cubic feet. The average make of gas |)cr ton of coal carbonised decreased by 1330 cubic feet; the coal consumed increased by 140 tons; the amount of New Zealand coal used increased by 773 tons and of Newcastle coal it decreased by 452 lons, in . all, 52 chains of new mains were laid; 70 new' services laid and 500 cut and cleaned. Appliances installed were: 135 cookers, 110 fires, 16 coppers and 25 water heaters. Reviewing the operations of the electrical department for the year ended at March 31, the electrical engineer (Mr J. W. Muir) slated that the ‘annual cost of power was £8.74 per k.v.a. as against £8.99' for the previous year. The power bought from the Manawatii-Oroua Power Board totalled £41,510 as against £36.182 the previous year, on increase of £5328. The total cost of the power handled was £41<045, as against £36,072. an increase of £4973. The number of new consumers connected totalled 231, as against 255. and the number of new electric ranges connected was 305 as against 230:
