IMPRESSED LORRIES

REFUNDS OF FEES

Information has »een received by the city traffic, department that an Order-in-Couiicil is now in the course of preparation to authorise the granting of refunds of heavy traffic fees in respect of the terms for which some motorlorries have been .impressed by the Armv authorities.

The city traffic manager (Mr H. J. Smith), in his report, stated: "1 communicated by telephone with the Commisisoner of Transport, and my action in refusing refunds was confirmed. I was informed that an Ordcr-in-Council is in course of preparation to meet the conditions and permit of a refund being made. No doubt a refund will be made compulsory. This will not involve a large amount for the financial year just closed, but may do so for the coming year if the impressment continues, as the vehicles impressed are mostly of the heavier type on which a higher fee is payable. In. this 'case the proportion of fees lost will be greater than the proportion of \ chicles impressed and may affect the council's finances to the extent of £IOOO or more.

"As the Crown is not hound by the regulations there is no likelihood of recovering the fees."
