FIRE PREVENTION

BOARD'S ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Board was held to-day. Mr A. 15. Mansford being re-elected chairman. There were also present .Messrs V. M. Edgar, A. Grigor, and L. •A. Hutton. Mr Grigor was appointed to represent the board on a central committee for the Home Guard and the Emergency Precautions Scheme.

In lii<= report tho superintendent (Mr P. A. Milverton) stated that there had been only 125 calls in the year ended March 31 as against 156 the previous year. Iwentyoiirlil actual fires had been attended ami there had been 23 false alarms, 20 of which had been malicious. Prevision had been' made for the instal'aiion of six extra alarm boxes, but tlic request for these had not vet been-received. Fire plugs and indiea tors Bail all been inspected and repairs carried out where required. All the build ings bad been painted during the year and all the machines and pumps were in good order. Tbo deputy-superintendent reported that, in the la-t quarter the usual inspections of fire plugs and alarms had been car ried out and 3256 plugs Bad been examined and found to be in good order, lho routine work and discipline of the staff was up to its usual good standard and he had no recommendations to make.
