Worthington represented the Crown. All the ap- : jieals were lodged on the grounds of either i public interest or undue hardship and sonic were on both grounds.
In the following appeals decision was reserved : Alexander I’irie Philip, law clerk (Mr G. C. Petersen). Morris Andrew McDowell, printer’s machinist, appeal by W. J. Crawford, who slated that at the present iitne, in the printing department they were shortstaffed.
Appeals adjourned sine din.-—William John Fleming, dairy-farmer (Mr G. K. Itowe). ltd ward William Gore, farm labourer, ap[>eal by appellant and William Gore; the evidence showed the appellant’s 20th birthday fell to-morrow, therefore he was not required for Territorial service. Geoffrey Hamilton N’icols, farmer (Mr A. AI. Ongley). The evidence showed that the appellant had a farm of 400 acres at Utttwai and helped also with work on a neighbour’s farm. Harold Alaurice Pierard, traffic officer, appeal by Union Airways, Ltd., the general manager of which (Mr M. Clark) stated the reservist furnished meteorological reports to the incoming planes and also did the statistical and accountancy work. Clive Ernest John l.ewin, civil servant, appeal by the superintendent of the Eire Brigade; it was stated that thc'rcscrvist had joined as an auxiliary fireman. Hilary Neville Heimnings, farm manager; appellant stated that he had two brothers overseas and he was managing a 200-acro farm at Umutoi. William Huddleston, farm hand, appeal by Joshua Huddleston (Mr E. J. Oakley). Allan Herbert Finlay, theological student, appeal by the secretary of the New Zealand Baptist College, Auckland. Gerald Hugh Komloy, sheep-farmer. Mr B. J. Jacolis, who appeared foj appellant, stated that ho was a returned soldier and would ho beyond the age limit at his next birlhdav.
Hugh Ernest Holland, a retired commander of the Royal Navy, appealed that he was not a member of the division that had been called up. Evidence showed that he was liable to lie called up with the British Navy. The appeal was upheld. I'yril George Imric, Public Works Department foreman, appeal by reservist and also the officer-in-charge of the Public Works Department at Oliakoa; the evidence showed that the reservist had 73 men iu his charge, and that he was the only person who knew the drainage and sewerage system. The reservist's appeal was dismissed, hut the appeal of tile oflicer-m----ebarge of the Public Works Department was held over till the next sitting of the committee. The committee recommended that the latter appeal be made through the correct channel, the National Sort ice Department. David Edward Good. —Held over for the calling of further evidence. Herbert Wilfred Aldrich, dairy-farmer; Mr 1,. I .an r - enson, who appeared for appellant, stated that ho had a SO-aore farm at Linton, on which he was the only worker; It carried 25 cows and a similar number of pigs. to he called up for service before May 31, 1941. Kenneth John Mitchell, agricultural student; stood over so that the .Massey College authorities can give evidence. Herbert Ivors-1, builder; stood out for appellant to gut a financial statement from liis counsel. Henry Albert llenson. dairyfarmer; adjourned till the next sitting of the committee.
