PIG INDUSTRY

DISTRICT COUNCIL. Mr B. E. Keillor was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Wellington District Rig Council on Thursday. Mr 11. M. Pierson, extension officer in pig husbandry, was among those present. “The past year has been an active one,’’ stated the president in his report, “and, generally speaking, the council has done its best to meet the demands made on it. Now that tbe shipping position lias become so acute as to preclude the bulk of tbe increase in production going forward, the council shares the keen disappointment of flic industry in the position which it is now placed. Care must be taken to place the industry in such a position where it. will ktop the best of its assets intact, so that when trade becomes normal it will bo ready to meet the increased demand for pig flesh which will inevitably arise.” Air Kciller added that the entries for the annual baconcr competition were as good as former years. I lit question of holding tnc annual dinner was left to the incoming committee. The council had been again faced with the loss of its supervisor (Mr A. A. Johnson), who had been called up for service with the forces, and the committee were considering a proposal whereby a part-time man could be appointed to the position. In regard to the council’s finances, the income for flic year bad amounted to £374 and the total expenditure bad been £865. Tbe total assets were £336. The policy of the committee of building un a reasonable reserve would justify itself within the next year or two, and it was gratifying to know that from a financial point of view the council would be able to continue, to give service to tbe industry in spite of reduced income. Mr Kciller expressed a[jprcciation of the work of the supervisor and the secretary (Mr L. I. Plimmor) and (banket, all who had assisted during the Year.

Air YV. 3. Cro. ichor. in endorsing the president’s remarks, urged producers to keep the wheels of machinery going so that when the present struggle was over the council could again give'excellent service.

Mr Pierson said the pig industry was not as badly off as a number of other industries. As to the hi turn policy of the council he could not enlighten the members, blit it was possible that something definite would he said before the next meeting of tee National Pig 1 Council. When our present troubles '*'•<' over a big increase in production would be necessary. which made it essential for the best stock to be kept for future production.

Mr Crouchcr and Professor W. Riddct were re-elected to the council. The matter of a third member was loft over. It was decided that the levy on all pigs slaughtered he increased by one penny for the forthcoming year. At a subsequent meeting of the council, Mr Kciller was reelected president.
