United States marines in steel helmets, and carrying fixed bayonets, patrolled the principal thoroughfares in sections of the International Settlement tonight. The marines took up guard near American property immediately alter terrorist bombing blasts, and withdrew when the International Settlement authorities called out the reserve police. However, they re-established their patrol as a result ot uncertainties. Attempts were made to blow up at least two other properties. In Chungking the Affiliated Banks’ patrol, Sergeant- Thoemmes, saved 100 lives when his attention was called to a strange package. He recognised the danger and drove out 100 Chinese bank clerks. The police said the explosions possibly were the opening ot a terrorist war between the Chungking and Nanking tactions, with the latter bent on driving all the Chungking financial institutions from Shanghai.
