CRUELTY TO COWS.
(To the Editor.) j'he cruelty of two Maori" boys to cows reminds us that in these times of stress we are inclined to forget what we owe to God's dumb creatures, for all the benefits bestowed on us through them. In the dreadful bombing of Britain, we read of the S.P.C.A. men going out after raids and rescuing animals, or putting them painlessly out of their misery. They, at least, have done us no harm, but the brute instinct in men bids them use brute force to human and animal alike, if through no other means they will gain their end. The two Maori hoys deserved- to be soundly horse-whipped. The Mayor and councillors call us to raise the standard of morale; we can at least help by not neglecting the welfare of dumb animals. Palmerston North has no S.P.C.A. clay, as many other cities have. It would be to the city's credit to have one. More humane systems should he taught of handling and ' slaughtering stock, both on farms and in works. It would , save an untold \ amount of misery to them, and perhaps disease to. us, as well as frayed ; nerves. I have often wondered how people can sit down to meals, with often the staple diet meat, and ask God's grace, yet not one thought do these people give to animal welfare. Are we so far above dumb creatures? Solomon says in Proverbs: "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast."—l am, etc., ANIMAL WELFARE. Palmerston North, 22/3/41.
