VALEDICTORY.
This morning, Mr J. Lindsay, who has been appointed chief postmaster at Invercargill, was entertained at morning tea by the branch controlling officers of the Chief Post Office staff in Palmerston North..Mr E. J. Smith, acting-Chief Postmaster, presided. Mr Smith called upon Messrs Pullar (telegraph engineer), Velvin (accountant), Goleman (senior supervisor, postal branch), Young (supervisor telegraph branch), Misses Cotter and Chapman (supervisors, telephone exchange), and all expressed their regret at Mr Lindsay’s departure and wished him good luck. Mr Smith stated that they were very sorry that Mr Lindsay was departing from Palmerston North after: such a short stay ; he was paying Mr Lindsay the greatest compliment when he said • that everyone looked up to him with the very greatest respect. In these days when world principles left much to be desired, it was pleasing to be associated with a controlling officer who maintained a Christian outlook'. Mr Lindsay had not only done his duty in the department, but he was also ■ a worthy, citizen of the Empire, being a father of seven children. He was also an Empire builder and had three sons on active service—a truly great tribute to the name of Lindsay. They congratulated him on liis promotion and they all Wished Mr and Mrs Lindsay and their family Godspeed and good luck in Invercargill. In reply, Mr Lindsay stated lie appreciated the tribute they had paid to him. He felt that if he had earned the respect of his fellow-officers lie had indeed achieved something worthwhile. He was going forward to Invercargill with a great deal of pleasure, as he had lived there many years ago. During " his career his children bad attended no fewer than 15 schools owing to transfers from one part of New Zealand to another, and one of his daughters had received part of her education in each of five schools. He thanked them all for their co-operation and loyalty during his term of office at Palmerston North.
