EXPORT AFFECTED

NO BUYING AT WESTFIELD.

i Per Press Association. I AUCKLAND, Alarch 12. | A further shock to the export meat j market was given at Westfield to-day | when it was found that exporteis of i baconer pigs were not operaung at the I weekly fat stock sa.e. No official 6tateI ment would be made by anybody concerned, in the export trade, but it was I learned that the action followed the receipt of unofficial intimation by an exporter that Britain could not take ah the baconers it was hoped to export. . T The Alinister of Alarketing (Hon. J. G. Barclay) declined to comment on ! tile situation but said the whole of the ! meat export trade would be reviewed at a.conference in Wellington. The exporters’ abstention from today’s market followed the isSue of a new price schedu.e. on Tuesday which reduced the values of baconers and porkers by gd per lb to .bid and.,bid respectively. T’lie best price for bacouers was £4 3s to-day against £4 15s a week ago and lor porkers £2 14s against £3 2s. When Denmark wa9 cut oh as a source ot supply last year an appeal was made to i\ew Zealand to increase the production ot baeoiiers even to the extent of 10,000 tons a year. Campaigns were initiated by the Government to induce farmers to breed more bacon pigs, the Controller ot .Primary Production. (Mr A. H. Cockayne) in an appeal on April 18 stating even if it had to be produced at a mss it was every farmer’s duty to produce bacon. The Government also -requested local bodies to u6e any available land for raising pigs. Up to the end of October export killings were double those of the corresponding period of the previous season. From January of 1 this year only bacon sides have been taken in endeavours to save storage and shippmg space.

Information relating to the position, that has arisen regarding shipments of baconers has been known in Palmerston North and Eeilding since early this week. When the subject was referred to bacon industry representatives they said that any statement to be made would have lu come from the Government. The “Mauawatu Standard’s” representative in AVellington, when lie referred the subject to the Government, was informed that it was not in the public interest to publish the information regarding the baconers.
