NOTES. Mr W. Cook, junr., of Saddle Road, had the misfortune last Friday to have his arm broken when cranking the engine of a truck. Last Saturday evening friends and relatives mot at the home of Mr and Mrs C. F. Doggett, Ormond Street, in honour of the coming-of-agc of Miss Nola Doggett, who was the recipient of a gold key in brooch form. Games and dancing combined to make a pleasant function.

PERSONAL. Major and Mrs H. Parkinson now of Christchurch, arc revisiting Woodvdlc. Miss Erica Hustwick, of Manaia, is with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. H. ITuetwiek. Miss Ruth Richards, of is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. L. Richards. Mrs L Rendle', of Palmerston North, is the guest of Airs R. Hands. Mr and Mrs L. Vickers, of Auckland, arc the guosts of the former’s parents, Air and Airs J. A. Vickers. Mr L. Pcarsc has returned to Papakura camp; Mr H. Reid was among several Woodville men to leave for Irentham on Monday; Air lan Skinner, who has had a month’s special training at Trcntharn, is taking a three months naming course at Waiouru; Private AI. Dewe, of the Permanent Staff, has returned to Trenthani.

OBITUARY. The late Air John McPeak, whose death occurred at Woodville on Monday, at the ripe age of 87 years, was a‘ native of Swatragh, County Londonderry, Ireland, and as a young man ho spent- some years working at blast furnaces in England prior to coming to New Zealand 63 years ago. He worked in Canterbury and Wellington districts prior to taking up land at AI an ricevi 11 c West. He also took up land at Afahara-liara Wostabout 45- years ago, and came to reside in Woodville about 18 years ago. He was one of the hardiest of pioneers and maintained an active interest in his farming operations until only about three years ago, when ill-health and an operation compelled his retirement. Airs AlcPeak predeceased her husband about three years ago. Mr McPcak’s passing is mourned by two sons and a daughter —Alessre John AlcPeak, Troup Road, George AlcPeak, Alaharahara, and Airs P. O'Connor, of Grant Road, Woodville. There are also nine grandchildren, and a brother, now in Alel bourne, formerly of New Zealand. One sort, the late Albert AlcPeak, was killed in the Groat War, and another, Charles, met his death as the result of a motor accident at Dannevirke 11 years ago. Requiem Alass was held in St. Coiumbkille’s Church this morning.

SALVATION ARMY OFFICERS. In the Salvation Army Hall last evening, the local corps and congregation, including the young people’s section and the Home League, strongly reinforced by ministers and members of the various church congregations, united wholeheartedly in farewelling Captain L. 11. Jones and Airs Jones, who have led the army operations here for the past two years, and will shortly be due at Levin. The proceedings wore capably led by SergeantMajor A. Richardson, ’ whose farewell address to the officers carried a high note of appreciation and goodwill from the corps and adherents. Rev. T. Coatsworth fMethodist) and Rev. W. IT. Nicholas (Presbyterian) thanked Captain and Mrs Jones for the mutually helpful co-operation which had characterised their activities in Woodville, and wished them God-speed and happiness in their new location. Mrs Hammond, junr., on behalf of the Home League, voiced a warm tribute to their officers, with a special word of thanks to Mrs Jones. Air A. Carrington, a member ol the congregation, conveyed a parting message of appreciation and good wishes. A brief address by Sergeant-Major. Richards, based upon a Scriptural citation, illustrated the value of leadership in religion., and other spheres of human activities. In their replies. Captain and Mrs Jones thanked the corps, band and other sections for their co-operation and asked them to “take charge” of their successors in the same way. The congregational singing was aided by the band and Mr IT. Pettcrson, the bandmaster, also contributed a vocal ,010. Refreshments were served, and the rendering of the Doxology concluded an enjoyable function. Captain F. D. IToten, who succeeds Cap tain L. 11. in the command ... of the Woodville corps oi the Salvation Army, has been an officer for the past nine years. Captain Hoten and Captain Jones are personal friends, brought about »J personal associations during a ten days spiritual- campaign held at Balclutha, both officers then being lieutenants. Captain Hoten, who is highly esteemed by all who know him, is of a kindly disposition, and has a winning way with the young people, and it has been stated that be is wellinformed Bible student. Airs Captain Hoten is the daughter of Envoy A. Pallant and the late Airs Pallant, and sister to Airs H. Hammond, junr., of Woodlands Road, and Airs G. Goldsaek, “Tlazclmere,” AlcLcan Street, Woodville. Captain Hoten was born in England, and it was not until he canto to this country and that he became an officer in the Salvation Army. Prior to going to Wairoa, Captain Hoten, like Captain Jones, was’ stationed in the South Island. All will wish Captain and Mrs Hoten every success in their new appointment.
