PERSONAL.

The Minister of Defence has been advised by the Air Ministry that Squadron-Leader Minden Vaughan Blake, formerly of New Zealand, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Major and Mrs Wilkes, who are in charge of Salvation Army work in Dannevirke, have received advice of their transfer to Nelson. Major and Mrs Caleott, Lower Hutt, will succeed Major and Mrs Wilkes. Mr H. Johanson, who has been engaged on relieving duties at the Waipawa railway station, has returned to Palmerston North. Mr Johanson was formerly stationed at Palmerston North for some time, being then transferred to Wanganui and later to Auckland.

The death is reported by cable of Professor Henry Bergson, the French philosopher, aged 81. He had a brilliant scholastic career and held many high professorial posts. He was Nobel Prizeman for literature in 1928, and was the author of several books and publications. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansion]; and Mrs Mansford, accompanied by Air Mansford’s niece, Miss Cecile Jones, of Dunedin, have been on an enjoyable motor tour to Taup'o, Waikaremoana, and • Wairoa. They lelt Palmerston North to-day to spend a few days in Wellington.

Father J. L. Kingan, S.M., 8.A.. took up his duties yesterday at the Central District Mobilisation Camp, Trentham, as Catholic chaplain attached to the Fifth Reinforcements, Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, with the rank of captain-chap-lain. With the exception of a twoyear break, Father Kingan has been on the staff of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, for the past nine years. There passed away suddenly on Monday an old and very highly respected resident of Levin, in tlie person of Mr John Robert Brown McFarlane, at tlie age of 72 years. Born in Melbourne, in 1868 Mr McFarlane came to New Zealand’ in 1904, settling on the West Coast of the South Island,- where for many years he carried on business in a general store. Transferring to Levin in 1918, he took over a private hotel, of which lie was the proprietor up to the time of his death. He took an interest in the various activities of the town ivas a foundation member of the Cosmopolitan Club and subsequently its president, and also a member of the Levin Lacing Club. Mr Mcßarlauc is survived by liis widow, one son and three daughters. 4
