DANNEVIRKE CAMP.

COMPLAINTS UNFOUNDED. NAPIER. Dec. 30. Complaints about the food and conditions at the Dannevirke Territorial camp were recently referred by the ALP. for Napier (Hon. V. E. Barnard) to the Minister of Defence, who lias replied that the complaints cannot be substantiated. The Minister said that for a short time in the early stages of the camp tho hot water for washing plates, etc,, was somewhat short, but that was understandable because-of the nature of the camp and the speed with which it was set up. That state of affairs was quickly remedied. Tho Minister said the quality of the meat and vegetables was good and on the same standard as that supolied to other camps throughout New Zealand. The milk used at all camps was purchased only from suppliers licensed by the Department, of Agriculture, and a high standard of quality and cleanliness was insisted on. “It is possible,” said the_ Minister, “that on one or two occasions since the inception of the camp meat has shown signs of being slightly underdone on the inside of the joint. The position is, however, always likely, to occur, oven in good hotels and restaurants, and-it is not lair to state that the meat as a general rule is uncooked.” The camp, he said, was subject to regular inspections, and on these occasions particular attention was always paid to the cooking and cleanliness ot the cooking containers and crockery. “I am informed that inquiries have boon made from residents of Dannevirke to whose homes the Territorials in training are freely invited,” concluded Mr Jones. “These people have no knoweldge of any general complaint about tho cooking, and it would seem that the majority of the men. in tlie camp at Dannevirke are satisfied with tho camp conditions.”
