EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD " OCTOBER 26. 1910.
Heavy loss of .life was reported as a result of an eruption of Mount Vesuvius, torrents of volcanic mud and lava sweeping miles of countryside. A Palmerston North dealer stated that fruit had never been dearer in the town, bananas costing from 16s to 20s per case, and oranges 20s per case. The ; scarcity of farm labourers was bocoming' a matter of considerable concern to farmers in the Auckland province. Captain Scott, the noted Antarctic explorer, had arrived at Auckland from Sydney and was to proceed to Christchurch. The Sydney Stock Exchange was wildly excited over" the Bullfinch gold find; an offer of £500,000 cash for. a 12 hours' option, made on behalf of a Victorian syndicate, was declined,
