PAHIATUA.

Mrs B. Adams, of Takapuna, Auckland, is the truest of Airs Mason, of Huxley Street. Air E. IT. Smith, son of Mr and Mrs C. J. Smith. Konini, leaves Saturday for Wcraroa, where lie will train as a gunner in the Air Force. Envoy Harold R. Painter, who has had charge of the Salvation Army’s activities in Pahiatua for the pact six months, has received . farewell orders and will be relinquishing his duties here on October 31. Of the 22 Pahiatua recru’ts who presented themselves for examination by the second medical board, twelve were passed as fit, six temporarily or permanently unfit and four cases were deferred for decision later.

At a meeting of the Pahiatua District High School Committee Air G. G. Taylor presided. The Department of Health wrote soliciting free dental treatment for English children in New Zealand for the duration of the war. and the chairman said that as the Pahiatua clinic was supported by subscriptions there should bo no difficulty. It was, however, pointed out that the circular might apply to all British children between the ages of fivo and 16, whereas the present school children only received free treatment up to Standard 4. Notice or the transfer of Miss H. Shankland from Carterton to Pahiatua was received from the Wellington Education Board and also the month’s capitation. The committee’s approval of the appointment of M'ss D. Hucston to the Pahiatua school was sought by the board, and this was given on the understanding that she is not to fill the vacancy caused by. ATr. Slater’s departure. The board forwarded a copy of its recent decision regarding the opening of the school each morning with the Lord's Prayer. The committee consented to the beginning of school in this manner. At the request of the headmaster (Mr A. E. Wilson) it was decided that the holding of prayers should not begin until the controversy between the Education Board and the department had boon settled. The death occurred in Pahiatua recently, after a long illness, of Mrs Rose Heckler, widow of Air Sidney Heckler, of Makuri, at the age of 58 years. The late Mrs Heckler was horn in Christchurch, and was the fourth daughter of the late Air John Brightling, one of the pioneers of Canterbury. After her marriage ■ in' 1913 she and her husband settled in Alakuri. She is survibed by her husband, one son, Mr William Heckler, and one daughter, Miss Helen Heckler. The funeral services in St. Peter’s. Anglican Church and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. L. Owen, Pongaroa. The pall-bearers were Alessrs J. Amundsen, P. Alorison, E. Chian all, T. F. Anderson, M.' Priest and J. Dick.
