Mrs John Buchanan has left Auckland to take up her residence in Palmerston North. The secretary of St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild was asked at the monthly meet- ' ing yesterday to convey sympathy to Alcsdames D. Buchanan (Tia'kitahuna) and J. Aitken, who are ill. Among Palmerston North visitors to ■Wellington for the first day of the Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham yesterday were Mesdames E. Barnes. T. Jamieson, G.. Shannon, L. H. Collinson and M. Millar, of Palmerston North. As a tribute to Miss E. M. Nutsey, M.8.E., A.R.R.C., prior to her departure for service overseas with the New Zealand Forces, a public farewell,

was given to her by the women of Auckland. A beautiful travelling desk in leather, fully equipped and fashioned so that it could contain all records, was presented to Miss Nutsey. Miss M. Cranston, of Milverton Avenue, was the recipient of a basket of flowers from members of the Grave and Gay Players when they visited her home on Wednesday evening. Appreciation was expressed of Miss Cranston’s help as leader of the players and also of the work of Miss 1. Carrell as secretary, a small presentation also being made to her. | Members of the civic circle .of the Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild make it their business to learn all they can about city affairs, and yesterday afternoon they paid an interesting visit to the gasworks, by courtesy of the municipal authorities. Mr Brown (foreman) conducted the party and gave lucid explanations of the processes of washing, scrubbing and cleaning the gas, a.nd the visitors were shown everything possible, from the view of Palmerston North at the top of the works to the fires at the bottom. The death has occurred of Mrs Mary Ann McDonald, of Birch Road, Tai-; Ixape, who was among the oldest pion-j eers in the country surrounding Man-, gaweka. Mrs McDonald was born in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, in 1860. and was the only daughter of the late John and "Janet Mann. Her marriage to Mr Alex McDonald took place in St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington, in 1595. She is survived by her husband, one son, Mr J. McDonald, Mangaweka, and three daughters, Mrs A, J. Mortland, Raulcura, Mrs S. A. Wylie, Pahiatua, and Mrs J. Mclntosh, Waipawa.
