ROYAL CHIEF BRILLIANT.

FOREIGN COIN WINS STAKES. RACING AT TRENTIIAM. WELLINGTON. Oct. 25. The spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened at Trentham yesterday in stormy weather, a northerly gale bringing up driving rain early in tlio day with only an occasional clearance. The track, however, was not' greatly affected, though the going became greasy and slow. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £50,566, representing an increase of £6783 10s over the first day last October Royal Chief, always a class horse, made a lot of fair handicappcrs, including the recent Mitchelson Cup winner Sly Fox, look second raters when it came to the final stages of the Wellington Handicap. Royal Chief cannot bo reliandicappod for the Now Zealand Cup, as he was originally allotted his weight for age, 9.6. Amigo is another well performed horse of class with a good Trentham "record. His performance in the Shorts Handicap was an outstanding one, as he had to come from the rear of a strong field. Foreign Coin, the winner of the Wellesley Stakes, was bred by Mr D. Kemp, for whom ho won his first race at Marton. He was then sold to his present owner, Mr F. H. Barrcll. Foreign Coin is by Lackham from Foreign Queen, by Mercian Prince from the Solferino mare Megan, who did good service ior Mr Kemp a few years back. His price, was ro ported as 700gns so at his first start for his new owner ho has returned £420. Par Avion, the winner of the two-year old handicap, impressed good judges by his solid finishing effort. Ho is a good looking colt by Ringmaster from Damaris, by Liinond from Pennon. Pennon was the first foal in New Zealand of the famous maro Eulogy, who with her daughters, has contributed so many good class horses to the turf. Par Avion looks like developing class form as tho season advances. He was sold at tho last National sales to Mr E. J. Kirkwood for 320gns. At the start of the Taita Handicap, Daljarrock and Erinscourt collided, and both fell, K. Chotc, tho rider of Erinscourt, damaged some ribs, and was unable to ride again during the day. An inquiry into the running of Sleeveless in the Shorts Handicap was adjourned till to-day. Additional results:— RIMUTAKA HANDICAP, of £350. Six furlongs.—s-6 Harina, car 8.6 (R. Both these good class horses came homo very strongly and entirely changed tho aspect in the last 50 yards. Up to the straight Screen Star, Rakahanga, Bronwen, Mittic, Orelio, and Kentucky had been the most prominent, with Night Eruption handy. Kentucky was going well at the false rail, but lie then lost his position by running out wide, and at the last furlong Night Eruption was ill a winning position. No sooiw had she flattered her supporters than Oreho dashed to tho front, and then Amigo came through between the pair to win narrowly but well from Kentucky, who finished on again and just kept his head in front of Kathhella.
