DUKE DISMISSED.

ROYAL HOUSEHOLD. The King has removed the Duke of Buccleuch, brother of the Duchess of Gloucester, from his post as Lord; Steward of £he Royal Household because of his alleged Nazi sympathies, i according to a London message, dated August 20, in the New York Times, i Rumours that the Duke had been 1 confined to his estates in Scotland have been denied in high quarters in England. He was in London in July, and was staying in his castle of Drumianrig, at Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in August. The King's order, removing him from his post in the Royal Household, was dated May 10, according to the New York Times, but news of the development did not become public knowledge until the middle of August. Ho was succeeded as Lord Steward by the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon. • The New York Times states that some high authorities in Britain wanted to go further than merely removing the duke from his post, and make an "example" of him. Acquaintances ot the duke say that he still hopes that Britain Will win the war. They say that he had riever tried to undermine the « nation's war effort. For some time, the duke has been known as an extreme "Right Winger." He was a strong supporter of Mr Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy, but he always seemed more interested in the domestic situation than in foreign affairs. The duke, who is aged 46, is one of Britain's richest landowners. He is reported, savs the New York Times, to have 460,000 acres on his rent roll, and to receive an income of about £200,000 a year from his estates, ■ spread over 14 counties of England ! and Scotland. In addition to his land holdings, he has wide interests_ in ! armaments, motors, banking, insuri ance, and railway enterprises. He is Governor of the Royal Bank of Scotland, of which the Earl of Strathmore, the Queen's father, is deputy-governor. The Royal Stewardship is a household post, one of the appointments made by the King. It is not a Cabinet selection.
