DEFENCE FOR ALL

AMERICAN POSSESSIONS. OFFICIAL DECLARATION. (United Press Association —Copyright.) Received October 24, 12.50 p.m. WASHINGTON, Oct. 23. The Secretary lor the Navy (Colonel F. Knox) to-day stated that the United States' Navy was prepared to defend any territory under the American flag. The United States had a moral obligation to help the South American realm.

The statement replied to questions concerning the navy's intention of defending the Philippines and other outlying Pacific Islands like Guam, Wake, and Midway. Colonel Knox said the navy had no plans at present to send part of the fleet on a goodwill expedition to Australia or Singapore. He said work had begun in Newfoundland, where the United States was locating a flying field and naval base on the south side of the island.

In recent months suggestions have appcai'cd in cable news from' various quartern that the United States would not defend the Philippines if they were attacked.
