CHINESE UNDAUNTED
BURMA ROAD TRAFFIC BATTLES WITH JAPANESE. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Bee. 11 a.m.) LOW DON, Oct. 23 A British, subject, Arthur Lewis Pollard Urquhart, has died at Kunming as a result of a Japanese air raid on the Burma Road. A message from Chungking says that, the Japanese bombings, traffic on the Burma Road remains unaffected and only minor damage has been suffered.
A Shanghai despatch says Chinese regulars and guerrillas are engaged m battle with the Japanese on a 1500miles front from the north. In Southern China they report many victories. Large numbers of Japanese have been withdrawn from the north recently for concentration at Hainan Island, where, it is reported, several hundred thousand are awaiting their "golden opportunity." The Japanese are heavily reinforcing the Licheng district in South-Eastern Shansi, where the Chinese claim to have stormed Langsi, 75 miles northward of "VVU.hu, killing 2000 Japanese troops. ; The Associated Press's Shanghai correspondent says Japanese reports indicate that the Chinese are continuing effective military operations on various fronts, having fought 2889 engagements in September.
