NOTES. A splendid patriotic effort, a gymkhana, was held by Mr and Mrs Alfred lUnisden, "Aototara." Tho local queen candidate, Miss Geraldine Little (Army) was present Besides the horse events for which five hores were supplied by Mr Ramsden there were various other events. Clock golf was won'by Mr P. Miller. '1 he-results of the horse events were:— Children's e Y, ents t = Turning, Cedric Poulton 1, Jean Smyth 2- flag race, Jean Smith 1, Cedric Poulton 2. Men's events: Turning (20 entries), A. Compton 1, T. Beatson 2; resecuc race (15 entries), W. loogood 1. J. Lang 2; flag race, J- Lang 1, W. Toogood 2; apple bobbing, J. Christian ; children's obstacle race, Nicholson 1, C. Poulton 2. ,-.,.■ ~ The procedure being adopted by the Hawke's Bay Man-Power Committee is to hear appeals against Territorial service, reserve its- decision and adviso applicants in writing of the results. The weekly parade of the transport section of the Young Women's Auxiliary was held in the Drill Hall, Dannevirke recently under the control of Lieut. N. 1. Piteaithly there being a splendid muster ! of 50. Lieut.-Colcnel W. W. Jefferd officer commanding the First Battalion Hawke's Bay Regiment, inspected the corps. Lieut.-Colonel Jofferd congratulated them upon their sfnaxtness and steadiness on parade. , A wedding of much interest took place ! in Edinburgh in August' when Anne Margaret Palmer, only daughter of Archdeacon K. E. Maclean and the late Mrs Maclean, was married to Dr Charles M. Ross, of Edinburgh. Archdeacon Maclean was once vicar of Holy Trinity, Woodville. The wedding took place at St. Georges Church, West Edinburgh, and Rev. Dr. Black, ex-Moderator of tho Presbyterian Assemßly, performed the ceremony. The funeral of Mr R. J. Brown, which took place recently was \ery largely attended by local citizens and settlers from Umutaoroa, Rua Roa, To Rehunga, Maharahara and other districts, testifying to the wide esteem in which he was held. Prior to the cortege leaving for the Mangatera cemetery an impressive service was held in St. John's Church by the vicar, Canon G. B. Stephenson, who also officiated at the graveside. The. pall-bearers at the church were Messrs E. Gibbard, W. G. Hulston, H. Murcott, T. F. Chapman, II Thompson and W. T. Gilbert, and at the cemotery Messrs R. A. Francis, A. F. Foote, J. H. Wiltshire, D. Morrison, E. Fletcher and A. N. Brighton. The W.D.F.U. announoo the date of their birthday concert and dance in aid of the branch funds. A splendid programme has beon arranged, artists being expected from Palmerston North, Wanganui and Foxton, besides local entertainers in vocal, elocutionary, instrumental and dancing items. A plav under the direction of Mrs Whillans is being arranged. The birthday cake is being raffled on behalf of patriotic funds, the proceeds to be divided equally among the four queen carnival candidates who are to be invited to attend. The patronage of sympathisers and friends is invited.
