ITALIANS HARRIED. IMPORTANT BASE HIT. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Rec. 9 a.m.) CAIRO, Oct. 6. A naval communique states tliat a naval unit bombarded the naval and air base at Stampalia, in the Dodecanese Islands, on the night of October 2-3. An R.A.F. communique says the anti-aircraft guns at Malta broke up an Italian formation, whereupon fighters shot down one machine and severely damaged another. We-bombed Fort Saleaya, 40 miles south of Galabat, in the Sudan, and also hit buildings on the Agordat railnvay at Aisha. _ . • South African machines hit the barracks at Mega, in Abyssinia. Our planes returned safely from all operations. , . ~ . Yesterday Mersa Matruh, in Egypt, was raided by enemy bombere, escorted by fighters, causing three casualties but little damage. Anti-aircraft fire hit one plane and is believed to have damaged two others. There is nothing to report on the other fronts. An Italian communique says two enemy submarines have been sunk, the enemy bombed Assab, causing slight damage.

R.A.F.’S FURTHER TOLL.

LONDON, Oct. 5

A Royal Air Force communique in Cairo states: “We successfully attacked shipping and warehouses at Benghazi. Fires broke out on a large meichantman and also near a naval dockyard, and several hits- were scored on small ships. We attacked Tobruk liarhour, and bombs fell on small ships moored at the jetty. Military stores and concentrations at Bardia were raided, and incendiary bombs dropped on the barracks.” An Italian ccvmrunique states that when British aircraft bombed Bardia and Tobruk, they caused slight damage but no casualties. A raid on Uerna resulted in three persons being killed and 38 wounded, and a barge was sunk. The British carried out raids ill the vicinity of Gallabat and one person was killed and four wounded. They also raided Macfa, Hinda, and Asmara, where slight damage was done, but there were no casualties. One British and one Italian plane were shot down.
