BRITISH EXPORTS.

KEENNESS FOR BUSINESS.

CORRECTING RUMOURS

Requests that every effort be made to combat any impressions that Great Britain could Mot supply manufactured goods as usual were contained in a letter which came before the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, last evening, from a London firm of exporters. The president of the chamber (Mr K. A. Henderson) expressed the opinion that there was no need for the letter to be sent to anyone in this Dominion, and certainly not in Palmerston North, because all here, knew their duty to order as much as possible from England in order to assist her to win the war. As an instance of the keenness of the English exporter, he said, his firm had received its first advice of the loss of a consignment of. goods on a sunken ship by a cablegram stating that the ‘goods were to be reshipped. Mr F. G. Opie suggested that the matter applied more to South American countries than to New Zealand, and the president agreed. The letter referred to stated that there had been numerous difficulties in obtaining supplies of certain raw materials for export. It was clear from letters reaching the firm from overseas that many firms were withholding orders under the impression that it wa.s useless to send them to Britain. “AA f e hope that you will use your influence to remove the false impression before it develops further,” added the letter. An accompanying circular outlined the steps being taken to push export trade still further.
