SPEEDY SUBMARINE.
THAMES PRESUMED LOST

(Rec. y. 50 a.m.) RLGBY', Sept. 24. The Admiralty announces that H.M. submarine Thames is overdue and must bo presumed lost.
Built in tho 1929-32 programme, which also included the Severn and Clyde, the Thames was a vessel of 1805-2680 tons displacement and carried a personnel of 60. During her trials she achieved the distinction of being the first submarine—barring the steam-driven K boats —to exceed 21 knots.' She subsequently "made a run from London to Yen ice at an average speed of 17 knots. She proved most successful in every way, her engines of 10,000 B.H.P. at 405 revolutions being of special interest as they enabled the unprecedented speed of 22J knots to be maintained. Her armament included a 4in gun, two smaller guns and. six 21iu tubes.
