NAZIS’ INFAMOUS CRIME.
Another Nazi crime has shocked the whole world outside of Germany and Italy. A vessel carrying passengers and 90 children to Canada was deliberately sunk when 600 miles from land by a German submarine and of the total number on board, 400, nearly thi*ee-quarters went to their death on a bitterly cold and stormy night. Of the children who were approaching their new land with expectation of finding a restful atmosphere after the turmoil and frightfulness of bombing only seven were saved. No more distressing tragedy has taken place since the first day of the war when the Athenia was sent to her doom by a German submarine, one of many which went to the Atlantic awaiting the declaration of war. It has been rightly said that the submarine commander may not have known ,that evacuee children were on this ship, but he did know that the night was stormy, that the sinking of the vessel far from land, could only result in appalling loss of life, and that the mercy of Providence only would enable any to escape. The German is no better to-day than a quarter of a century ago in regard to sea warfare. Honourable and humane conduct is scorned ; defenceless women and children are to be slain at will so that ruthlessness can prevail. The Nazi philosophy has claimed its innocent victims once again by the score. Like the mothers and children of Poland, Holland, Belgium, France, and finally Britain they lie slain because in Germany there is none in authority who has other than the feelings associated with the worst type of brutality, t'harp. is the contrast of the British submarine commander who permitted the great liner Bremen to pass unmolested because he could not accommodate its crew on his ship. This latest Nazi crime must steel all British people to forever destroy the philosophy that governs everything German.
