MR A. E. JULL PASSES.

UNEXPECTED DEATH,

Per Frees Association

HASTINGS,- Sept. 24. Mr Albert Edward _ JuIJL. jyL.P. Jor Waipawa, collapsed and died suddenly to-night at AVaipatva.

The late Mr Jull, who "was 76 years of age was born at Fort Erie, Canada, where he was educated, arriving in. the Dominion in 1877 as a boy and proceeding immediately to Hawke’s liav. In 1881 he went■ to. Waipawa. Marly in life he took an interest in' public affairs, and in 1884 was a promoter of the Waipawa Building Society, of which he had ever since been secretary. In 1890 lie was. elected to the Town Board, being chairman for some years, and four years later commenced his association with the County Council, of which he was chairman on several occasions. ‘ 1 . Mr Jull’s interest in local body work extended further afield, and in 1904 he became president of the Counties’ Association, while he; was also a member of the. Napier Harbour Board and a member of the executive of the Harbours’ Association. After the disastrous fire of 1896 he took an active part in forming a volunteer brigade, at Waipawa, and he was subsequently president for a term of the Fire Brigades’ Association. He also rendered service as a member of the Highways Board. Politics first claimed Mr Jull’s attention in 1911, when he unsuccessfully contested the AVaipawa 6eat in the Liberal interests against Sir George Hunter, an experience repeated :m 1914 and 1919. In 1931, however, ' ho won the seat as a Coalition candidate in a straight-out contest with Mr J. I>. Ormond (Reform). In, 1935, howr ever, in a contest in which four candidates went to the, poll, Mr Jull, standing as a Nationalist candidate, was unseated by Mr H. M. Christie (Labour) by a margin of 259 votes. At the 1938 general election he regained the seat from Mr Christie by a, margin of 470 votes. Flags were flown’ . on Government buildings in Palmerston North at halfmast to-day as a tribute to Mr Jull’s memory.
