SCHOOL COMMITTEES
WEST END SCHOOL. The West End School Committee met on Wednesday, Mr G. Tremaine presiding. Tlxe chairman stated that the profit from the school ball was in the vicinity of £(SO. Satisfaction with this l'esult was expressed by membei-s. Mr Tremaine was appointed to represent the committee on the provisional committee being appointed in connection with the Intermediate School. The Wanganui Education 80-ai'd advised that Mrs F. Allen’s appointment sis supernumerary teacher at tho school had been cancelled as her services were required to fill a relieving position' at the College Street School. The board advised that Miss N. McKittrick had been appointed infant mistress. Letters of resignation were received from Mr K, Dawkins (first assistant) and Miss L. H. Waters from the staff on account of their appointment to the Intermediate School. A resolution was carried placing on record the committee’s appreciation of the valuable services or these teachers, expressing regret at their projected departure, and congratulating them on their appointment to the Intermediate School. Mr Tremaine stated that Mr Dawkins and Miss Waters had been a tower of strength to the school and their de-pai-ture would bo widely regretted. Both had greatly raised the standard of school sports, and therefore the physical fitness of the children. Under Mr Dawkins’s direction and coaching the school cricket and football teams had gi'eatly improved. In his report the headmaster (Mr H. W. Jackson) stated that when tlio school resumed on Monday Miss McKittrick took up her duties as infant mistress and Miss McKearney ias vuperninnerary. There were 12 admissions and lour withdrawals, giving the record. roll number of 501. Cabinet heaters had been installed in all classrooms and had been given a short trial. In some rooms they would provide satisfactory heating.
HOKOWHITU SCHOOL. At a meeting of the Hokowliitu School Committee on Wednesday, Mr H. W. Cox presided. Mr G. A.’ S. Melville was recommended to act on the provisional committee of the Intermediate School. As the result- of a discussion on the number of members proposed to constitute the provisional committee, a motion was passed that the committee should be constituted of two members from each of the six primary school committees iu Palmerston North, and not of one member from each committee and six others as suggested by the Wanganui Education Board. The acting-headmaster (Mr K. M. White), in his report, stated that the school roll now stood at 281. Arbor Day was celebrated by talks to the children, and the removal of overgrown 6hrubs from the slnubbery.
