EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” SEPTEMBER 6, 1910.
An historic landmark of early Canterbury in Piraki House, Piraki (one of the first whaling- stations in New Zealand), had been completely destroyed by fire. A picture operating room was tho latest addition to the list of show facilities at the Palmerston North Opera House.
Field-Marshal Lord Roberts had arrived in Germany formally to announce the succession of King George to the Throne of England. He was heartily welcomed by the Kaiser. There were 6423 fresh cases of cholera reported during the week in 24 provinces of Russia, with 3244 deaths.
A matinee performance of “Sweet Nell of Old Drury.” with Miss Nellie Stewart in the title role, at Sydney, realised £I4OO for the hospital radium fund. Lieutenant Seddon’s tandem biplane was being exhibited at Wolverhampton (England). The area of the planes was 1000 square feet, and the motors were of 100 horse-power. The Berlin paper Vorwerts stated that both Britain and Germany were working feverishly on warships modelled on the monitor type, and intended for tho destruction of Dreadnoughts.
