SEAMAN’S VALOUR.
POSTHUMOUS AWARD OF V.C.
LONDON, Sept. 4
The Victoria Cross has been awarded to the late Leading-Seaman Jack Foreman Mantle, of H.M.S. Fovlcbank. The citation reads:— Leading-Seaman Mantle was in charge of the starboard pom-pom when enemy aircraft attacked the Foylebank on July 4. Early in the action a bomb shattered his left leg, but he stood fast to the gun and went on firing with the hand gear because the ship’s electric power had failed. Almost immediately he ivas again Avounded in many places. BetAveen the bursts of fire lie had time to reflect on the grievous injuries from Avhich he would soon die, but his great courage bore him up till the end of the fight, AA-hcn he fell by the gun lie had so valiantly served.
