ANNUAL CONFERENCE. WORK OF HIGHWAYS BOARD. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 30. The annual conference of the North Island Motor Union was held to-day. Mr J. H. Edmundson, of Hawke’s Bay, presided over an attendance of about 50 delegates from eight automobile associations affiliated to the union and two representatives of the South Island Motor Union were also present. Statistics about the work of the Main Highways Board in the last year were given by Mr M. H. Wynyard, motorists’ representative on the board. He said they spent £4,796,286 on road sealing, bridge construction and maintenance work. The North Island’s share was 65.70 per cent, and the South’s 33.30 per cent. The revenue of the board was £2,750,000, which was £56,000 less than the previous year, due mostly to the decline in tyre duty. , • Mr Wynyard added that the board had so far spent £29.000,000 on high-, way improvements throughout New Zealand, and its grant for the current year was £2,700,000. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr J. H. Edmundson (Hawke’s Bay); vice-presidents, Messrs A. Grayson (Auckland) and E. A. Batt (Wellington); council, Messrs F. G. Farrell (Auckland), W. T. Guild (Taranaki), W. A. O’Callaghan (South Taranaki), A. S. Burgess (Wanganui), W. H. Brown (Manawatu), It. W. Roydhouse (Wairarapa), E. S. Palliser (Wellington), and Dr. W. D. Fitzgerald (Hawke’s Bay).
