HOROWHENUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Aug. 26.
Tho death 'occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital this morning of Mr R. W. Hill, of Rangiuru Road, at the age of 74 years. The late Mr llill, who had carried on business in Otaki for many years as a gardener, entered tho institution about five weeks ago. He bad been in indifferent health for a considerable time, duo largely to disabilities contracted during the South African war. Several brothers and sisters are left to mourn their loss, among them being Mrs A. W. Broadway, of Otaki. Mr and Mrs W. A. Smith and Miss Mary Cairns, of Christchurch, have arrived in Otaki to take up their residence. While being driven along the Hautere Cross road at an early hour on Saturday morning a van failed to take a turning, with the result that it crashed into a macrocarpa hedge. The driver, Mr Cunningham, luckily escaped with slight injuries to his chest and leg. It is most unusual for garden hoses to be seen in use at this time of the year, but such is the case- in several local gardens just now. There is still a shortage of tank water in some parts of the district.
