CONSERVATION OF PETROL.
FARMERS’ SUGGESTIONS. Proposals for the conservation of petrol during wartime were made at the. recent meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. The secretary (Air IT. S. M. Quigley) stated that executive representatives had had a conference' with the No. 2 Licensing Transport Authority (Air P. Skoglund) on this subject and the following two suggestions were submitted by Air GCammock, who attended the conference :
(1) Where' a farmer with a small truck makes a large number of trips to . cart his own fertiliser, the job could be done by a carrier with a big truck on less petrol, and probably less cost; (2) where a farmer makes a number of trips to cart his own stock to and from a sale, if a carrier with a suitable' truck wbro employed a saving could be made. Air Cammock mentioned in his re oort that, on being asked if it would he nocessarv to pay additional heaw traffic fees if a farmer carted a neighbour's milk to a cheese factory. Air Skoglund had stated definitely “No.” Tn fact, thov would not require an' - fai-mor to t°ke out a license to cart milk to a cheese factory. The Transport Department did not want farmers—changing from butter to cheeseto buv trucks if it was possible to get neie , '’bmtrs who already had trucks to onrt their milk. The suggestions wore approved.
