Y.M.C.A.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS. At a meeting of tlie Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. there were present Messrs G. A. Eliott (chairman), T. K. Hodder, B. C. Donald, L. I. Plimmer, G. Griggs, A. W. Yortt, W. H. Brown, A. Lawson, A. Lascelles, A, Hopwood, and Dr l'\ Scott. The report of the month’s work stated that the general procedure of classes had proved highly satistactory, especially with the junior classes, whose attendance had been of good With the senior men’s class it was pleasing to note a steady increase in the average attendance. “Mr H. Parlane, one of the senior leaders, will be leaving for camp shortly, and Mr B. Harvey, a leader, will be posted to the R.N.Z.A.F. next month. Both of these men have given admirable service, and have been long associated with the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. The primary group is showing keener interest in its work and the attendance lately has been of the highest average since my taking over'this class. For August this group has had one new member per week. Activities such as games and physical training are enjoyed in the usual spirit, while at the same time our religious instruction is ever to the fore. Secondary: General work in this group has been carried out according to plan and the boys, as ever, enjoy their programme to the full. The attendance, however, while above the average for this month, has been slightly affected by school activities such as footbull practices and rehearsals for their annual playette. Hi-Ai: Fellowship in this group is always in great evidence and its co-operation in class activities is indeed helpful. Two members, however, have resigned from this club and are now members of the Y.M.D. Y.AI.D.: This group is reaping the full benefit of all activities and is being thoroughly appreciated by all members. Membership shows an increase for August. Social: r J bis group was fortunate in having Air Hioken to attend recently with a movie projector, a wide variety of films being highly enjoyed. One film of note was the spectacular but grim entry of German troops into Poland. An enjoyable social and dance was held and members of the Y.M.D. with their invited friends spent a happy time together. It is the members’ wish that they donate a percentage of the profit to the Ladies’ Auxiliary Fund, which is n fine gesture. Although only a small charge was made lor the social, I believe the donation to the Auxiliary will he in the vicinity of £l. Interhouse basketball: Never before have competitions such as these shown such popularity, the games this year have reached an interesting climax, the final results being open to much speculation so close are the leading teams. Three out of the four leading teams m the A grade are gymnasium teams, and in the B grade our Y.M.D. team lead with a fine margin of points. Optimist Club: It is unfortunate that the greater number of the citizens of Palmerston North fail to realise what a great asset to the community is found in the Palmerston North group of Optimists. Optimism breeds confidence, and confidence in these momentous days of British history surely plays an important part in our final victory. . In our Palmerston North division optimism is surely in grpat evidence, many enjoyable luncheon hours being spent each week. Recently all members were invited to bring " along their wives and lady friends and a. very pleasant tune was spent. Harriers: Good pack runs have been had of late.
