GIFT FROM MANAWATU. MORE DONATIONS. The movement in Palmerston North to raise a fund to provide a gift .fighter aeroplane from the .Manawatu is as anticipated making its appeal to tne general public. . . , ~ A correspondent writing under the nom-de-plume of “Spitfire” says:— I would like to congratulate Air Adams on his public spirited action m commencing a local fund, by donating a sum of £SO towards the purchase of a fighter aeroplane, and will have pleasure in forwarding a cheque during the next few days in support of this well deserved object. This, fund will undoubtedly have the support of many ot our Alanawatu residents and should be fully subscribed before September 30. ■ TELEGRAM TO AIINISTER.
A request to the Minister of. Finance to review liis decision to limit the availability of sterling funds to iiUU--000 is contained in a telegram sent by the Alayor (Mr A. E. Alansford) to Hon. W. Nash to-day. It reads:— “As public appreciation of the wonderful services of t\H R.A.F. is very strong, tlieir desire to tangibly express same will substantially exceed £IOO,000. In view of this will you please review your decision and give your undertaking that the wholb amount raised by the public for the gift plane fund will bo sent home for that specific purpose? Further, .that you give this intimation now before the public starts contributing.” Donations will l>c published in the “Alanawatu Standard” as they are received. In the meantime the following
£IOO,OOO GIFT PLANE FUND. (To the Editor.) Sir, —In connection with the movement to raise £IOO,OOO in New Zealand (this amount being limited by Hon. \\ . Nash) we are making enquiries as to the probable sum's the various districts Vill be called upon to raise, in order to give a guide to the Palmerston North public. Any sums in excess of the £luu,uuu raised may be merely a donation to the Consolidated Fund, and to get this point definitely cleared up we think it is wise, in the public’s interest, to make enquiries before the appeal is made.
