TRAMWAYS BOMBSHELL.
ANOTHER RISE DEMANDED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 26. The Auckland Transport Board received as a bombshell at-to-day’s meeting a claim by members of the Tramways Union for another o per cent, increase in wages over and above the 8 per cent, granted by the Emergency Disputes Committee last May. After a discussion, in which the action of the union was strongly criticised by some members, the board decided, on the motion of the chairman (Mr Nagle), with only three dissentients, that the union be informed that, in accordance with the terms of the decision given in May last by the tribunal set up under the Strike and Lockout Regulations, the board considers that members are not entitled to a further increase of 5 per cent., and, further, that, as a claim has now been made by the union for a further 5 per cent, increase, the board is of opinion that, if such be the legal position, it is quite unjustified and unintended; also that application be made immediately to the Arbitration , Court for exemption from the general order of August 12 of these and ail other employees whose wages were increased by 8 per cent, following the decision of the tribunal.
