CONGRESS REMAINS ALOOF. WARDHA, Aug. 21. The President of Congress (Maulana Azad), in a statement after consulting the working committee, said he had informed the Viceroy (Lord Linlithgow) that there was no meeting ground on the basis of. the Vice-Regal declaration of August S for discussion of British policy. He added if a situation arose in which the Viceroy thought a meeting would be advantageous he was always willing. At Bombay Jawaharlal Nehru, (the Leftist leader of Congress), in a statement .regarding the arrest of Krishna Dutta Paliwal, president of the United Provinces Congress Committee, for a provocative speech, said: “The arrest is a challenge and a warning. The trial approaches. The cause we have loved again beckons. We have no prizes in store and can look forward only to hardship, suffering and long parting from those we love.” LONDON, Aug. 22. The working committee of the Indian National Congress Party has rejected the constitutional proposals of the Viceroy and the Secretary of State for India (Mr L. S. Amery).
The resolution of the committee says the British offer is wholly opposed to the principles of Democracy and to the best interests of India.
