The British Minister of Supply (Air H. Morrison) said the former vicepresident of the Skoda works, who was the first man to make the Bren gun, had said that the new Bren-guns now being made in Britain were better than those turned out by his own factory. This man left Czechoslovakia after the German occupation and took with him 100 of his technical experts, who are now giving the British factories the benefit of their experience. He described the British armament drive as approaching the point when it would be decisive. Nazifying Denmark. A Zurich message from Copenhagen says a new political party has been formed in Denmark under German protection known as the National Party. Its programme is the immediate introduction of the National Socialist (Nazi) system. Nazis and Holland. The Berlin radio states the Germans have not gone to Holland as conquerors. Holland would be preserved as a territorial entity. -> Canadian War Loan. Subscriptions to the Canadian noninterest War Loan totalled 2,422,436 dollars by August 15. Singapore’s Example. How valuable has been, the initiative of the Straits Times of Singapore .in stimulating the patriotic generosity of the people of the colony is indicated by. the fact that the £50,000, transmitted to the Treasury on August 17 makes a total of £400,000 contributed, says a British Official Wireless message. The Singapore Colony War Fund and that of the Federated Alalay States now aggregate over £500,000.. Soviet and Baltic States.
A British Official Wireless message states that Air R. A. Butler (Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs) told the House of Commons to-day that a communication had been received from the Soviet Government regarding the incorporation of the three Baltic States —Esthonia, Latvia and Lithuania—in the Soviet Union. It was still under the consideration ot the British Government and he was not in a position to disclose its contents.
The Belgian Congo. Mr R. A. Butler, in reply to a question in the House of Commons, said: “Since June 18 the Belgian Alinister of the Colonies, who is in London, has been exercising the full powers with which he bad been invested as Admin-istrator-General of the Belgian Colonies. The local administration in the Congo is under the Governor-General (AI. Ryckmans), who declared on June 25 that the resources of the Congo were at the entire service of the Allies. Certain economic problems arising from the Congo as the result of the enemy -occupation of Belgium are under discussion with the British Government.” —British Official Wireless.
