DEFENCE PACT.
CANADIAN OBLIGATIONS. “WILL NOT BE SHIRKED.” Received August 22, 8.5 a.m. OTTAWA, Aug. 21. The Premier. (Mr Mackenzie King), at a Press conference at the close ot a Cabinet meeting, stressed that the mutual defence agreement with the United States in no sense involved the shirking by Canada of her defence responsibility. . ... It is expected_that the Premier will call a special session of Parliament about September 16 to approve the defence agreement, the endorsement ol which the Conservative leader (Mr R. B. Hanson) announced after an hour’s conference with the Premier. At St. John’s (Newfoundland) the Air Minister (Mr C. G. Power) and leaders of the Eastern Command have arrived to discuss the leasing of air bases to the United States, which has been approved by Government supporters and the Press. Tiie Commissioner for Justice (Mr L. E. Emerson), in an interview, said strategic points on the Avalon Peninsula and the coastline bordering Cabot Strait should lie fortified and air and naval bases should control the approaches to the St. Lawrence. He said Newfoundland’s position was the Atlantic gateway to Canada and it would become “the Singapore of the North Atlantic.” • ,
