EXTENSIVE MINELAYING.
R.A.F. WORK IN BALTIC. SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Aug. 20. Further information is available of the British mining of the Baltic Sea, which has been systematically carried out by the Royal Air Force Bomber and Coastal Commands since the opening of the Norwegian campaign. Over 600.000 miles have been flown on this duty, and the results measured both in enemy losses and disorganisation of liis shipping have amply justified the constant journeys. , Devised after close consultation between naval and air experts, the minelaying expeditions, it is stated, required considerable navigational skill in their execution and tlie crews of these machines take great pride in dropping their burdens with the greatest nicety in the mouths of rivers, across traffic routes, and often actually within the harbours themselves.” Few reports of the success of these operations ever reach the public, but it can be stated that in two out of the many minefields laid 12 Nazi ships are known to have been sunk and many more damaged.
