FIRST CASUALTIES.

SOLDIERS BATHING IN EGYPT. 1 GISBORNE, Aug. 21. In a letter to his father in Gisborne, Private-J. A. Graham, one of three New Zealand soldiers who became the first casualties of the Expeditionary Force in Egypt, has sent word that he is recovering well from the effects of a bomb explosion. Private Graham, who is a son of Mr G. Graham, writes t'hat he and others of his unit were bathing on the coastline when Italian aeroplanes flew over and dropped bombs. The party had little warning of their danger, for the bombs fell and exploded within a minute or two of their realisation that the visiting aeroplanes were enemies. The Gisborne soldier was hurled on to some rocks near which 'he was standing when an explosion occurred, and he is still suffering from bruises to the legs as a result of liis impact. The explosion of the bomb was so near that he suffered concussion.
