RUGBY FOOTBALL

MANAWATU UNION. Final arrangements for the quadrangular Moatcar Cup tournament to open on Saturday were made at the weekly meeting, last evening, ot the Manawatu Rugby Union. Those present were Messrs A. M. Ongley (chairman), K. Wi Eglinton, J. R. Hardie, B. Palmer, J. Eagle, E. G. W. Schwarz, R. Gillespie, F. E. Sherwood, R. Foster, E. Clevely and P. 0. Skoglund. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. It. Crawford and W. Gleeson. It was decided that all schoolboys in caps be admitted at a charge of sixpence. A dinner is to be held on Saturday evening for tho players and those billeting them. The Wellington Rugby Union advised that, owing to the financial position caused by the war, it had been decided to play no inter-union lower grade matches this season. The Marist Brothers teams were granted t'he use of a ground at the Showgrounds on August 16 for a match to he played against two Wanganui Marist teams. Mr Skoglund reported that, after finishing the competition with equal points, Phoenix had beaten Technical School last Saturday in tho final of the sixth grade, bv 1G points to 3. The committee decided to endeavour to arrange a match with a team from the Southern Hawke’s Bay (Dannevirke) Union. Mr Palmer brought up the matter of free passes for soldiers, and it was decided that members of the Expeditionary Forces may obtain passes from the secretary. SATURDAY’S MATCHES.

United, _ 3 Showgrounds, 1.30 p.m.; University v. I 1 eliding Old Bovs, No. 2 Johnston Park, 3 p.m.; Bunnythorpe v. Kia Toa, Bunnythorpc, 2 p.m.; St. Patrick’s v. Ilaleombe, Feilding High School ground (or Ilaleombe), 3 p.m.: Air Force a bye. Thirds A. —University v. United, No. 2 Rugby Park, 3 p.m.; Feilding Old Boys v. Feilding High School, No. 5 Rugby Park, 1.30'p.m.; St.. Patrick’s v. Technical, No. 6 Rugby Park, 1.30 p.m. The referees are to lie appointed at a meeting of the new Referees’ Association this week. MOASCAR CUP MATCHES. Secondary school Rugby at its ' best will be seen in Palmerston North next Saturday and Monday, when the annual inter college tournament for the MoascSr Cup will be held. The holders at present are the To Aute Maori Boys College, a team which will be remembered for a fine display against tho Palmerston North Boys’ High School in Winter Show Week. In addition to these two teams, St. Patrick’s College (Silvorstream) and Mt. Albert Grammar School (Auckland) will be contestants. The teams are expected to be well-matched, and all are capable of producing bright, open football, as will be remembered by those who have seen previous contests for this trophy. Tho opening games will be played at the Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon. Mt. Albert Grammar School and Palmerston North Boys’ High School will meet at 1.40 p.m-., and To Aute College and St. Patrick’s at 3 p.m. The final games will bo played on Monday.
