(From , Oui Own Correspondent.) OPIKI, Aug. 13. A large 'gathering of settlers and friends filled the Opiki Hall when a function was held in honour of five young men of the Third Echelon from this district—Private L. A. Young, A. K. Young, F. Paget, E. Kay and C. Ever- . leigh. The guests of honour were welcomed by the chairman of the committee, Mr W. Jackson, who, on behalf of the people of the district, presented well filled wallets to each man as a token u! ’ esteem, with best wishes to their future 1 success. It was regretted that the district’s first non-commissioned ofihet Lance-Corporal Robinson was allowed l' go overseas with the First Echelon without I a suitable farewell, but the chairman asked Mrs Robinson to accept a similat gift on behalf of her husband. Mr C | JJavey, president of the Sports Club, presented a tobacco pouch to each man with the good wishes of the • club. Pri j vate E. Kay replied on behalf of tin j ni6n. They were accorded musical honours, j after which, led by Mr M. Creighton at 1 the piano, many old and new songs t were sung, Irish songs were sung by Mr P. Flannagan, of Palmerston North. Euchre prizes were won by Mrs Sadd and . Mr Cook, while the Monte Carlo was won by Sir F. Lynch and Miss B. Sliers. A cake, made and donated by Misses M. j Phillips and Sf. Hocking, for the Sports Club, and iced by Mrs Sanies, was won by Mr R. Miers. Sir J. Percy has returned home after an extended holiday in Masterlon, much improved in health. Privates L. and A. Young spent part of this leave with , their brother, Sir C. Young. Private E. | Kay spent the week-end as the guest lof Sir and Sirs V. Claridge. Slisses N. Young (Cambridge) and J. Young (Wellington) spent the week-end with Sir 1 and Sirs C. Young. Mr and Sirs L. T. j Webb, who have sold their farm, have left the district to make their new home at, Kiritaki, Dannevirke. Sir and Sirs !W. Locke, lato of Glen Oroua, have ' taken up their residence in this district. jA farewell party was given during the I week-end to Private E. Kay by Sir I and Mrs V. Claridge at their homo in Slakerua Road, A large number of friends and neighbours spent a happy ■ evening with cards, competitions and dancj ing. A flag 500 tournament was won by Mrs Ellery and Mrs Young and Mr R. | Scanlon and Private F. Paget. Other sol- | diers present were Privates E. Paget., L. Young, A. Young, C. Everleigli and Sergeant SI. Tantrum.
