CITY OF FLINT’S CAPTAIN.

Received August 9, 9.45 a.m. AVASHINGTON,; Aug. 8. The Navy Cross, for distinguished service, lias been awarded the City of Flint’s master, Captain Gainard.

Towards the end of October, 1939, the Nazi “pocket” battleship Deutschland captured the American ship City of Flint in the Atlantic and transferred to her survivors from the Stonegate, one of the Deutschland’s victims. The City of Flint was taken to the Russian Arctic port of Murmansk and held there for several days, strong indignation and resentment being expressed in the United States, the Government of whl/i made representations to both Germany and Russia. Eventually the ship was released and returned to America.
