DRAINAGE OF LAND.
MAKERUA BOARD. The Makerua Drainage Board mot yesterday, when there were present Trustees H. Seifert (chairman), J. D. Aitchison, \V. Jackson, Cl. T. (Jiitlord, G. Larsen, H. Samos and H. Alexander.'
The overseer (Mr P. V. Tucker) reported that the deepening of Parr’s drain had been completed and the men were now engaged in taking willows out of the main drain, after which the removal of gravel from Smith’s drain would bo attended to. The deepening of the old main drain was being continued and the northern end would he reached this week. A , further eight chains of the bank at Page’s Point had l>ccn protected, there remaining only the weights to be placed on the work, these having been made on the job. Spaces were being prepared for treeplanting, and this work would be done as soon as the weather permitted. Work to be proceeded with included the planting of willows at Paki’s Point, and the repairing of protection at Kemp’s bend. The chairman reported on an inspection made of the district by the board last month. The report stated that considerable erosion was noted at Page’s Point, and it was resolved that a small breach on the point be repaired and serious erosion lower down be protected as far as the available trees and wire would permit. Willows were to lie planted near and above Mr Buglass’s boundary. Twenty chains of willows were to be planted below Paki’s Point, providing wire could be obtained for fencing. Repairs were to be put in hand on the Poplar riverbank erosion and an instruction given to the foreman to carry out the work.
The chairman agreed to inspect Evcrleigh’s bank, Coley’s bank, and any other works in connection with tho Manawatu-Oroua River Board’s scheme. Trustee Aitchison and the engineer (Mr 0. J. Dolan) will accompany the chairman. It was decided to proceed with _ repairs to Everleigh’s bank, for which, a request was before the meeting.
It was decided to defer consideration of reports by the engineer on unauthorised stop-banking, the Mana-watu-Oroua River Board’s proposals on the removal of stop-banks, and other matters, to a special meeting. The engineer reported that as matters were at present it was possible that the No. 13 scheme men would have some time in hand when they had finished their present work. It was decided that if this is the case they should be employed on willow planting. The financial statement showed that the bank overdraft was £3426 13s 4d, compared with an overdraft of £4257 18s 8d in August last year. Rates paid for tho year amounted to £952 12s 6d, leaving £1491 Ss 6d outstanding.
